Welcome to Dolton School's new web site

Introduction

Dolton is a relatively small village with a present population of over 900 people. Dolton is situated in rural North Devon, fifteen miles south of Barnstaple and thirty-five miles north west of Exeter, the principal city for the county. The village has grown steadily over the past fifteen years to accommodate a variety of housing.
Facilities within the village include three public houses, a thriving village shop/mini supermarket, butcher and delicatessen, electrical shop, antique shop and a post office. It also has a well-supported village hall, which is used extensively by the community, playgroup and toddler group. Dolton has its parish church, St. Edmund's, a Methodist chapel, plus a football club and two play areas for children.
The village is proud of its range of community activities, which include a Drama Club, Art club, Needlework Guild, Golfing Society, Football Club, Yoga classes, Youth Club, a superb Cub and Scout Movement, and the Dolton and District Twinning Association, which has won several national wards in recognition of its links with Amfreville. The village is twinned with Amfreville in Normandy and Hillerse (Germany). Every year the village has its own carnival.

The school is part of the Torrington Academic Council, which comprises of the thirteen feeder schools to Great Torrington School. We regularly work with schools within the Council. The school received a good inspection in March 1998 and we expect to be re-inspected next Spring.
Although a small school, Dolton is able to provide a wide range of experiences for its pupils. This is achieved through its partnership with two other neighbouring schools the Clinton School at Merton and Beaford Primary. This partnership is known as the Halsdon Cluster. Not only does this provide opportunities for children to work within larger peer groups in music, sports and educational visits, but also for staff to work jointly on In-set and Assessment.
Parental involvement is another key to our success. Not only do parents work in class on a wide range of activities but also help to run several After School Activities. Currently we offer children activities in football, netball, cycling, recorders and woodwind and ICT. Soon we shaal be able to offer basketball, tag rugby and girl's football.
